Memberships

Find out which memberships are required to compete at sanctioned horse trials in Ontario.

Competition requirements

To compete at recognized events in Ontario, riders must hold three memberships:

  • Equestrian Canada Sport Licence (Bronze, Silver or Gold)

  • Ontario Equestrian (OE) Membership

  • Ontario Eventing Association (OEA) Membership

Riders from other Canadian provinces or other countries must hold equivalent memberships from their province or country.

Ontario Eventing Association Membership

Memberships must be purchased through Ontario Equestrian with your OE Membership.

Only competition riders are required to hold annual or day memberships.

Ontario Equestrian Membership

You must purchase your OE membership before purchasing your Equestrian Canada sport licence.

 

Memberships are required for competition riders and horse owners.

Equestrian Canada Sport Licence

Licences required for riders and horse owners based on level of competition:

  • Bronze: EV60 to EV90 

  • Silver: EV100 to 105

  • Gold: EV110 and above

Equestrian Canada Digital Horse Recording

At EV100 level and above your horse must have an Equestrian Canada Digital Horse Recording, which must be obtained through Equestrian Canada.

Canadian Pony Club Members

Canadian Pony Club members are allowed to show at OEA events. To participate in this program:  

 

  • You must fill out the OEA Day Membership form when entering an event, and indicate which Pony Club you are a member of on the form. The OEA Day Membership fee will be waived.

  • You must be in good standing with the Pony Club and have a current Ontario Equestrian membership.​ If your good standing status with the Pony Club is revoked, you will not be permitted to compete in sanctioned OEA competitions until your Pony Club good standing status is returned.

Additional details:

  • You may compete at any level for which you meet the minimum requirements.

  • You are not eligible for OEA points collection, year-end awards, or participation at OEA championships.​

This agreement was made official as of January 2015. It can be amended or abolished by any time by either organization.

Become an OEA member

Find the OEA membership that makes most sense for you! We offer competitive rider memberships, temporary memberships, supporting memberships and corporate memberships .

OEA members who are under age 25 as of January 1 of the current year are eligible to register for the U25 Program.

Non-resident membership requirements

Learn more about membership requirements for riders who:

  • Live in other Canadian provinces or territories 

  • Live outside of Canada

Riders from other provinces and territories

​If you are living in another province or territory in Canada, you are welcome to compete at sanctioned OEA events in Ontario as long as you:

  • Are a member in good standing of another Provincial Sport Organization/Provincial Horse Trials Association

  • Hold the appropriate Equestrian Canada Sport Licence and Horse Recording

Riders from other provinces who are not OEA members are not eligible to:

  • Accumulate points towards year-end awards.

  • Qualify for yearly championships, if they are held.

  • Take part in any of the OEA programs such as the Young Rider/Under 25 Program.

Non-resident OEA Membership

If you wish to purchase an OEA membership, you will be required to show proof of a current membership with the Provincial Sport Organization in your province of residence.

Riders from other countries

If you are living outside of Canada, you are welcome to compete in EC sanctioned national events in Ontario provided that you:

  • Hold all current memberships that are required to compete in your country of residence

  • Show proof of some form of liability insurance.

 

Non-resident riders are not eligible to accumulate points towards year-end OEA awards or qualify for championships, if they are held.
